Fermi Linux v5.2.1 8/16/99 Connie Sieh & Dan Yocum Fermi Linux v5.2.2 10/16/99 Connie Sieh & Dan Yocum Fermi Linux is based on RedHat 5.2 . All of the RedHat errata(patches) as of 10/18/99 have already been applied. We have added a few packages(rpms) ourselves. These are documented in /Fermi/doc/html/521/rpm2html/Fermi_Red_Hat_v5.2.1.html. For the 5.2.2 release the following was changed ----------------------------------------------- UPS/UPD was updated to fix bugs Checks for disk space Installs via cdrom when the network is disconnected Fixes the "obtain" login/password UPS/UPD is supported via the UAS group in the OSS Department Contact them via the helpdesk at helpdesk@fnal.gov or uas-support@fnal.gov The following packages have been updated in the RedHat/RPMS area XFree 3.3.5 from 3.3.3 vixie-cron lpr mars-uve netscape from 4.6 to 4.7 inews inn wu-ftpd sendmail was updated to 8.9.3 (version from 6.1) fix email relay The following packages have been updated in the Fermi/kernel-2.2 area addserial 1.0-2 from 1.0-1 Fixes order in which /etc/lilo.conf serial console line is defined. Ensures that /dev/console has correct major and minor number newkernel Upgrades to kernel 2.2.12-20f1 vs 2.2.10 2.2.12-20f1 is RedHat 2.2.12-20 from RedHat 6.1 with the Fermi added eepro100.c 1.09 update. This fixes problems with the Intel 100 ethernet card. The 2.2.10 kernel directory is still there if one needs it. The following changes were made to the workgroups in Fermi/workgroups RIP now installs the 2.2.12-20f1 kernels. Farms still uses the 2.2.10 kernel Farms does NOT install UPS/UPD RIP and Farms now install the updated addserial. ConsoleServer had the consoleserver rpm updated. Security -------- If the directory DONOTEXPORT exists on this cdrom then it may NOT be exported out of the UNITED STATES. See the README in DONOTEXPORT for more information. This is because ssh is contained in the DONOTEXPORT directory. If the DONOTEXPORT directory does exist then ssh will be installed during the install if you have a Fermi ip address and you are on the network. SSH is installed viaftp from a Fermi system during the install. This ftp area is limited to fnal.gov addresses. SSH is available from replay.com in /pub/crypto/linux/redhat/i386 . This release assumes installation at Fermilab. Thus one might want to check the contents of /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny and change if necessary for access from sites other than .fnal.gov. The login banner has been changed to not have "highlighting" characters as it caused problems with vi. General Install --------------- The install floppy has been changed considerably. Most of the changes are to support the concept of "workgroups". This allows for customization of installs based on a "workgroup". CDROM INSTALL ------------- If you install this cdrom on a system that is not connected to the internet then the last step will take a very very very long time. This is because the install is timing out looking up DNS and this timeout is slow. To install via the cdrom you can just boot off the cdrom if your bios supports that feature. If not, you can make a cdrom install floppy from /images/boot.img.cdrom or /images/boot.img.net for a network install floppy. For info on how to make a floppy see /doc/rhmanual/manual/doc091.htm. Also, see /README which is the standard RedHat readme. The following are things that we have added or changed: /images/boot.img.cdrom /images/boot.img.net Install floppy image versions based on 5.2, but needed for this CD to work. /RedHat/RPMS/zz* RPMS that we have created for security and other bug fixes. /Fermi/RPMS Fermi RPMS that may be needed but cannot live in /RedHat/RPMS. /Fermi/SRPMS SRPMS for the Fermi stuff. /Fermi/doc/html This is a copy of our web pages. /Fermi/workgroups One directory for each of the following workgroups Astro ConsoleServer FermiStandAlone RIP CDF D0 ODS SDSS CDFonline FOCUS OSS Theory CUSTOM Farms PAT /contrib This area contains items that do not fall under a standard Fermi Linux v5.2.2 installation but are useful to have. /kde The K Desktop Environment RPMS for Fermi Linux 5.2.1. No support. To install see /Fermi/doc/html/install-kde-521.html. /gnome The Gnome Desktop Environtment RPMS for Fermi Linux 5.2.1. No support. To install see /Fermi/doc/html/install-gnome-521.html /tomsrtbt/tomsrtbt-1.7.185 A really good recovery/rescue disk. http://www.toms.net/rb /RedHat/RPMS/howto- These howto rpms were deleted because of a shortage of cdrom space. If you need them get them from RedHat/mirrors. /RedHat/RPMS/gimp-manual-1.0.0-1.noarch.rpm moved to doc/BIGRPMS/gimp-manual-1.0.0-1.noarch.rpm This was done to save cdrom space. -Connie Sieh -Dan Yocum We can be contacted at csieh@fnal.gov and yocum@fnal.gov
