Fermi Linux 711a This release is based on RedHat Linux 7.1 with the following changes. For more details on the changes see farther below. Please read this entire document before installing. *Web information www.fnal.gov/cd/unix/linux www-oss.fnal.gov/projects/fermilinux *Installation Locations linux.fnal.gov:/export/linux/711/i386/ Floppy image locations ftp://linux.fnal.gov/linux/711/i386/images/bootnet.img ftp://linux1.fnal.gov/linux/711/i386/images/bootnet.img PREP -- FCC3W Yolanda -- WH8ne Floppy laptop image locations ftp://linux.fnal.gov/linux/711/i386/images/pcmcia.img ftp://linux.fnal.gov/linux/711/i386/images/pcmciadd.img ftp://linux1.fnal.gov/linux/711/i386/images/pcmcia.img ftp://linux1.fnal.gov/linux/711/i386/images/pcmciadd.img To make the install floppys. Put a scratch floppy in "/dev/fd0". Download the above file(s) dd if=bootnet.img of=/dev/fd0 Note that there is a "drivers" floppy image for "other drivers". See the RedHat documentation for what is on this floppy. The following has been updated. Some of the items are the same as before even though nothing changed. This is because the info is important and I did not want to have to tell people to go and look at the older release notes. Contrib locations including kerberos, ssh, afs ftp://linux.fnal.gov/linux/contrib/ See /RELEASE-NOTES for the RedHat release notes. See /Fermi.documentation/ for info on what has changed compared to RedHat 7.1 . See /FERMI.README for a tour of the nfs/ftp/cdrom install areas. There is more detail at the end. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 0. The really big change with this release is the inclusion of the RedHat errata kernel 2.4.9-31 and the RedHat errata XFree86 4.1 . Both the installed and the installer kernel are now 2.4.9-31. This requires the use of the a new network install floppy. See above on how to get or make this floppy. In lots of cases the old floppy will still work, but you clearly will not be taking advantage of any new drivers. So please use the new floppy. I will be replacing the stock that both PREP and Yolanda have. I will also have a stock at the linux users meeting on Wednesday May 22. 1*. It was created for use by D0 on a Dell Poweredge server. The kernel was obtained from kernel.org and has xfs and nfs patches added. It does NOT have any patches from RedHat. It is NOT a RedHat kernel. I have not tried this kernel. It is only here as a convienience. It has only limited device driver support. See the readme files in this directory for more info. You are on your own with this kernel. d0-kernel-readme.txt d0-kernel-readme.html d0-server-kernel-2.4.16xfs-2.i386.rpm d0-server-kernel-2.4.16xfs-2.src.rpm 4. /contrib/kerberos/ Updated krb5-fermi-config-1.5-9.i386.rpm to handle the case where users selected both Fermi kerberos and RedHat kerberos and get 2 telnetd config files in /etc/xinetd.d/ 5. /contrib/pcp/ Updated pcp(Performance Co-Pilot) to pcp-2.2.2-11.i386.rpm pcp-config-2.2.2-7x.1.i386.rpm 6. /contrib/intelpro100/ Added a rpm called e100-config-2.2-5.i386.rpm to It changes your /etc/modules.conf file from using eepro100 to e100, plus it forces the interface to full duplex. This isn't just a replace your modules.conf file, this actually changes the eepro100 words in the file, so you don't have to worry about it removing other things that you have in your modules.conf file. The only part that I worry about is if you have it setup so that you are forcing your eepro to something other than 100Mpbs full duplex (Maybe you really like 10Mbps half duplex) That might mess some things up. (NOTE: your modules.conf doesn't have to have eepro100 already forced to full duplex. Just if you were wondering) Added the 1.8.38 version, note the kernel version, it matters. e100-2.4.9-31smp-1.8.38-1.i386.rpm e100-2.4.9-31-1.8.38-1.i386.rpm e100-source-1.8.38-1.i386.rpm 7. Added afs to the BooNE workgroup. 8. mozilla 0.7 -> mozilla 0.9.9 * mozilla 0.9.9 -> mozilla 1.2.1 Mozilla has made tremendous strides in both stability and features. In order to put a feature rich, more stable web browser into the distribution, we have upgraded mozilla to it's latest release * Version 1.2.1 has many bug fixes as well as useful new features. You will have to install these yourself as no workgroup installs them by default. We have taken the source rpms and made minor modifications so that they bind properly to Fermilab's AFS servers. There is one change in the installations because the openafs rpm's require that three rpm's are installed versus just one with openafs-fermi. This split in rpm's will allow up to build and put in kernel modules, without having to upgrade all of the afs client. This is on the distribtion in /contrib/openafs , and via ftp from ftp://linux.fnal.gov/linux/contrib/openafs/7x/ Old rpm's openafs-fermi New rpms' openafs openafs-kernel openafs-client 10. Nvidia has changed their license. This allows us to include their drivers on our distribution. See /contrib/nvidia/README.txt and /contrib/nvidia/README.FERMI for more information. 11. /contrib/openssh This is a test version of openssh with cryptocard, kerberos support. For more info send mail to csi-group@fnal.gov . 12 openssh We have replaced RedHat's openssh with Fermi's kerberized and patched version. openssh-3.4p1f13-2rh73.i386.rpm openssh-askpass-3.4p1f13-2rh73.i386.rpm openssh-askpass-gnome-3.4p1f13-2rh73.i386.rpm openssh-clients-3.4p1f13-2rh73.i386.rpm openssh-server-3.4p1f13-2rh73.i386.rpm ________________________________________________________________________ Older info which is still relavant. 0. Fermi Kerberos rpms along with the appropriate ssh are installed by default in "Fermi Full Kerberized" mode for all workgroups except for the following where a question is asked during the install. The default choice for this question is "Fermi Full Kerberized". Again this means "Full Kerberized" and thus NO system passwords. "Fermi Generic Desktop" "CDF" "CDFoffsite" "CDFonline" "CDFlevel3" "GenericFarm" "BooNE" "ODS" 1. Adaptec scsi support is still poor, just not as bad as it was. If your install hangs and you have adaptec scsi then reboot with "linux apic" at the install boot prompt. This has helped at least one user. The Intel Lancewood motherboard has this problem. So you need to do this to get it to install. 2. Install turns on IDE DMA by default. This can cause some cdroms/disks to be "sad". So if you have problems during the install in particular with it "hanging" the suggested fix is to turn dma off during the install. This can be done by at the install prompt typing linux ide=nodma or text ide=nodma 3. inetd and /etc/inetd.conf have been replaced with xinetd and /etc/ xinetd.d/ . Similar features but done differently. 4. Other RedHat features are still there. 5. The current kernel is still 2.4.3 . The test kernel in /contrib/kernel has been removed as it is too old. New test version soon. 6*. You are able to install only via nfs. Ftp installs do not work at this time. Still working on this. Should be back at a later date. 7*. The default for firewall is off still. You can still select what you want. 8. Both text and graphical installs should work as long as they work with the default RedHat install. The reason for the "if" is that the normal RedHat installer will switch to "text" mode if it cannot do graphical mode. Note that ftp installs only work in text mode. 9.* Cdrom installs are now available. Will post images ftp:/linux.fnal.gov/linux/711/iso/ ftp:/linux1.fnal.gov/linux/711/iso/ (not really here until I get more disk space) __________________________________________________________________________ RedHat errata detail.
