Installing KDE:
It should be noted that no support is given or implied by the Computing Division
for this product. Questions can be posed to linux-users mailing list.
The average installation will require 83MB of free space - 22MB for downloading
the packages and 61MB for installing them.
Preparation
- Download the base packages from ftp://linux.fnal.gov/linux/521/i386/contrib/kde/kde-dist/ to a new, clean directory or enter the ~contrib/kde/kde-dist/ directory on the CDROM.
- Installation
- Install the package kde-installer-1.1.1-2rh5x.i386.rpm
- Create the following symbolic links:
- ln -s qt-1.44-4.i386.rpm qt-1.42-rh51.i386.rpm
- ln -s qt-devel-1.44-4.i386.rpm qt-devel-1.42-rh51.i386.rpm
- Run /usr/sbin/install-kde-1.1.1. The program will prompt you for information.
Running KDE
- To start KDE, either the super user can execute the command '/opt/kde/bin/usekde ' or the individual user can execute the command.
- Be sure to add the /opt/kde/bin directory to your PATH environment variable:
- For bash and sh add this line somewhere in your .profile:
- export PATH="$PATH:/opt/kde/bin"
- For csh and tcsh add this line somewhere in your .cshrc:
- setenv PATH "${PATH}:/opt/kde/bin"
