Fermi Linux STS 12 (Short Term Support) December 02, 2009 PURPOSE Provide a "bleeding edge" Desktop RedHat derived Linux that has minimal Fermi modifications. This is NOT to be used for PRODUCTION systems. The intent here is for laptops/desktops which have "bleeding edge" hardware which is not supported by SLF 5.x. WHY RHEL 6 is expected to be based on Fedora 11/12 as were RHEL 3, 4, and 5 . Having experience with newer Fedora releases from a admin , user and a "building" view will be helpful in our creation of SLF 6. WHAT IS IT A install DVD for i386 or x86_64 derived from Fedora 12 with Fermi modifications for use on "bleeding edge" hardware for Desktop use. LIFETIME Since this release is derived from Fedora it has the same lifetime as Fedora. Currently the lifetime is the current version plus 1 back. So the lifetime of this expires when Fedora 13 is released. With the current Fedora schedule that will be about January 2011. Users will have to move off of Fermi Linux STS 12 when this LIFETIME expires as there will NOT be any security updates after that time. SUPPORT linux-users@fnal.gov is the only support AVAILABILITY Via DVD iso only. Ftp location is ftp://linux1.fnal.gov/downloads/sts12/ Frequency of new DVD iso Minimum of quarterly. DISCLAIMER Since this is based on Fedora 12 which is a "bleeding edge" linux Distribution then some applications may have many bugs and problems. There could also be issues with hardware support. All "bleeding edge" Linux Distributions have issues , it is part of the process of "bleeding edge". -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Table of contents DOWNLOAD INFO ADDED compared to Fedora 12 Packages that are provided by STS 11 that were ADDED to SLF UPDATED compared to Fedora 11 Installer/legal modifications SRPMS HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS LIMITATIONS INFO ERRATA _____________________________________________________________________________ DOWNLOAD INFO _____________________________________________________________________________ http://linux1.fnal.gov/downloads/sts12/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ADDED compared to Fedora ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Installed by Default krb5-fermi-config zz_tcp_wrappers_change ocsinventory-fermi yum-security Installed by Default but can be select off flpr zz_ntp_configure zz_sendmail_fermi_gateway zz_fermi_ssh_config zz_fermi_sshd_config Selectable during Install SL_rpm_show_arch Available via yum openafs-thiscell SL_no_colorls zz_lang_collate ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- We added some packages to SLF 5 that were not in RHEL 5 .
